ABC. The first newspaper to incorporate the vacuum evaporators to treat wastewater:

The ABC was the first Spanish newspaper to incorporate vacuum evaporation technology for the treatment in company of wastewater from its printing processes. The efficiency of the technology obtains a final residue of the maximum concentration, which costs resulting residue management have been minimized. The treated water from the evaporator is recycled for other uses.


This technology is being used in many industrial sectors. Vacuum evaporation is being implemented in the graphic arts industry, for the advantages over other purification techniques, such as osmosis or ultrafiltration.


The wastewater generated by a newspaper as the ABC are mainly those from prepress devices (liquid developers) and rotating machines (water from washing of wet ink on the printing plates).


At the end of the distillation process, the treated water is recycled for various uses (irrigation, health, etc.). And the residue resulting concentrate is derived to an external manager.


The determining factors in the decision were: the energy savings involved in working under vacuum technology, the low conductivity of the resulting water-less than 300 microsiemens (legal maximum is 6,000) - and the resulting COD - between 600 and 800 ppm ( legal maximum 1,500) -. These values have allowed the resulting water pouring into the law, but the company has opted for the principle of "zero discharge", with the treated water is drawn from the evaporator is recycled for cleaning such as washing printing plates.


The impact on the cost savings is twofold. First, the drastic reduction in waste management costs, since it is the most concentrated (in concentrations higher than 90%). Second, the significant savings in water (recovers more than 90 percent of the treated liquid).


If we look at it from a sustainability point of view, we save a precious resource like water and contribute in the first phase of concentration of waste prior to definitive treatment in the specialized manager.
